so me and shawna went to the thing at new hampshire international speedway. woke up at around 4:40 this morning. rob never came cuz he had stuff to finish up with his apartment that he's moving out of... so me and shawna drove for around an hour, got to the place, asked where to park, and the guy told us a greyhound place down the road for workers- where they'd bus us to the track. and we couldnt find the place, so we turned around and went back to a main parking area, and another guy told us where to park, and we ended up being fairly close to the track.
we got to the army area, and there was one guy there. we showed up around 6:30 (half an hour earlier than the time they told us to be there, but we figured we'd show up early). so we stand around for about 20 minutes, and finally, josh, the guy who was going to be our boss for the day shows up and tells shawna that she couldnt wear shorts. even though the agency in FL told us two or three times (i kept double checking..) that we could wear shorts as long as they were khaki. sooo. luckily, i'm amazing, and i happened to have an extra pair of pants in the car. they were greenish, but i figured it was worth a try- otherwise we'd have to drive home and not make money for the day.
so we went back to my car, and shawna put on the pair of pants i had, and we walked back, and nearly 30 people showed up before we got there. josh okay'd her pants (thank god...who wants to drive an hour for nothing). i think he almost sent us home because they could only have a certain amount of people working, since we showed up again after the rest did. luckily he didnt, otherwise he would have heard it from me.
we got our ugly black t-shirts that they gave us, split up into groups and were told what to do. me and shawna had to take a clipboard and walk around the area outside the track where we were, asking people if they wanted to come see the army exhibit 'free personalized dogtags, rock wall to climb, simulator rides and more'. and we had to go for people between ages 16-39 (which there were a lot of older people, and a lot of kids). all the damn teens were bitchy and ignored us or were rude. took several hours just to have one person fill out the release and get a wristband from me(so that they dont get sued, and so that they can tell who's old enough to go on the rock wall).
I'm terrible at approaching people in a salesman-like way. I was one of those people that everyone hates. who walks up to you in the mall, at a fair, anywhere, asking if you'll buy this, sample that, get this free if you do something. I was told I would be standing around in a tent asking peopel to fill out information or helping with any of the activities. Didn't happen. I wasn't prepared for being out in the sun, and my face, neck and scalp are a bit burned. I didnt mind the fact that I needed to be walking around, because I enjoy the thought that I got something out of it- a bit of exercise, but I felt extremely awkward so the day doesnt feel like time well spent.
Maybe I just didn't see it coming. Maybe I should have from what they told me. I expected to have to talk to people and be friendly and stuff, but I didnt like how they were treating us. I felt so confused the whole time. People i was working with would respond like i was an idiot when i'd ask about something i didnt know about, and they just werent respectful. and josh kept hitting on all the high school girls working for him. he kinda weirded me out.
